Hi! My name is Karen. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I earned my Master's in Marital and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego and have been in the mental health field for over 10 years. Across my time in the field I've worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families in different settings including in-home, the medical system, community mental health, and alongside the juvenile justice system as well as the education system.

My Approach

I work from an assumption that you're doing the best you can and that you want to do better. With that in mind, we'll take a look at what's getting in the way of reaching that better you. We'll move at your pace in the direction of what's challenging and we'll stabilize before moving further into that challenge. I aim to provide the space that allows you to engage honestly and courageously and I use evidence-based practices to help you make changes for that better you and better life.

My Focus

The focus of my career has been to work with individuals who experience anxiety, trauma, and life as well as relational stressors. I've also worked with families experiencing difficulties related to stage of life transitions and acculturation differences. In work with children and adolescents I do incorporate some level of family work to promote sustainable change.

My Communication
Style

My communication style is warm and gentle yet direct. I actively listen and attend to both verbal and nonverbal communication.

My Journey

My interest in psychology came from growing up as an extremely shy child that was very good at listening and enjoyed learning. I had to work through my shy-in all sincerity, anxious- nature and this became much easier once I learned that I did have strengths I could rely on. While at times I look back on my shyness and think it an obstruction, in reality it was a gift that let me really look at others. I learned from academia and professional experience, of course, but also from paying attention to people and seeing what happens when they are listened to and valued. I've honed my skills and strengths over the years and continue my love of learning, specifically about the human condition, through history, religion, and psychology.
