Does Insurance Cover Therapy in California? Everything You Need to Know

One of the most common questions we hear from people considering therapy is: "Does my insurance actually cover this?" The short answer is yes — for most Californians, it does. But the details matter, and understanding them can save you hundreds of dollars and weeks of confusion. This guide breaks it all down so you can walk into your first session with confidence.
The Law Is on Your Side: Mental Health Parity in California
California's Mental Health Parity Act, combined with the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA), requires most insurance plans to cover mental health and substance use disorder services at the same level as medical and surgical care. In plain terms: if your plan covers doctor visits for a broken leg, it has to cover therapy for anxiety or depression — and at the same co-pay level.
This applies to most commercial insurance plans, employer-sponsored coverage, Covered California marketplace plans, Medi-Cal, and Medicare. Only very specific types of plans — like certain grandfathered plans or short-term health insurance — may be exempt.

What Does Insurance Actually Cover for Therapy?
Coverage varies by plan, but most insurance policies in California cover the following therapy-related services:
Individual psychotherapy (talk therapy, CBT, DBT, EMDR, and other evidence-based approaches)
Couples and family counseling
Child and adolescent therapy
Telehealth / virtual therapy sessions
Psychiatric evaluation and medication management (with a licensed psychiatrist)
Intensive outpatient programs for more complex or acute conditions
At Healthy Mind, we accept most major insurance plans and will verify your benefits before your first session — completely free of charge.
How Much Will I Actually Pay Per Session?
Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan, but here are the key terms to understand:
Co-pay: A fixed amount you pay per session (e.g. $20–$50). This applies after any deductible is met.
Deductible: The amount you must pay before insurance starts covering services. Many plans reset on January 1.
Co-insurance: A percentage of the session cost you pay once your deductible is met (e.g. 20%).
Out-of-pocket maximum: Once you hit this ceiling for the year, insurance covers 100% of covered services.
Healthy Mind clients pay an average co-pay of just $24 per session. Many of our clients reach their out-of-pocket maximum by mid-year and pay nothing for the rest of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance and Therapy
Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor to see a therapist?
In most cases, no. With PPO and many HMO plans in California, you can contact a therapist directly. However, some HMO plans may require a referral. Our team will check your specific plan when we verify your benefits.
How many therapy sessions will my insurance cover?
Thanks to mental health parity laws, most California plans no longer cap the number of covered therapy sessions per year. Coverage is medically necessary — meaning your therapist documents your ongoing need, and the sessions are covered accordingly.
Will my employer know I'm going to therapy?
No. Your therapy sessions are protected by strict HIPAA privacy laws. Your employer does not have access to your health records or insurance claims. The only information that passes through your insurance is a general diagnostic code — no details about what you discussed.
Does virtual therapy count as in-network?
Yes. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, most California insurance plans are required to cover telehealth therapy at the same rate as in-person visits. Healthy Mind's virtual sessions are fully covered under your in-network benefits.
The biggest barrier to starting therapy isn't cost — it's not knowing what things actually cost. We help you figure that out before you book your first session.
